The Ultimate Fish Tank Sensory Bin!

Sensory bins are not only a wonderful way to entertain your child, but a great way to incorporate sensory stimulation!

Sensory bins engage at least one, if not several, of the five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell or taste.

This sensory bin incorporates sight, sound and touch!

Sensory Bin Ideas

My kids love sensory bins!

They had so much fun with the easter sensory bin that I made, that I decided to make another one!

My six year old got a fish tank for Christmas. He was so excited!! He absolutely loves it!

The fish glow in the dark, it has a volcano, it’s his own personal night light. It seriously looks like it came straight out of Finding Nemo! Blackwater Creations did an amazing job on it!

So I thought, why not make my own version of his fish tank that the kids could play in?!

It was a big hit! Using their toy fish and sea animals, they played and splashed for hours!

Sensory Bins For Toddlers and Preschoolers

This sensory bin has something for both toddlers and older children.

My four year old loved this as much as my six year old. And I know that toddlers will as well.

What little kid doesn’t love to play in water?!

Of course, because this sensory bin does contain water, adult supervision is required.

How to Make The Fish Tank Sensory Bin

First you need a bin to create your fish tank in.

I use a clear plastic tub that is about 20 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 6 inches deep.

It doesn’t have to be exactly that size. Just make sure that it is large enough for them to play in without knocking out the contents, and not too deep that they can’t reach in to play well.

Also, if you have multiple children playing with the bin you want to make sure that it is big enough to accommodate everyone.

Next gather all of your fish tank decorations!

You don’t have to use exactly the same things in your tank that I did.

I used a combination of items that we already had on hand, and items that I found on amazon.

Sensory Items

These are the items that I added to our fish tank sensory bin:

Aquarium Gravel (I used three bags of this)

Aquarium Fish Tank Plants

Colorful Star Fish

Coral Reef Toob Fish

Rocks

Water

How to Assemble Your Fish Tank Sensory Bin:

Now for the fun part! I probably had as much fun assembling this sensory bin as my kids did playing with it;)

Start by adding your Aquarium Gravel to your tub.

Then position your fish tank plants, fish, rocks, etc. throughout the tub.

Now take a second to sit back and admire your handiwork:) Your kids are going to love this!

The last step is to add water.

Add the water carefully so that you don’t dislodge all of your rocks and items!

Now it is ready for play!

This tub encourages imaginative play. My kids loved making the fish swim, play together, and splash!

My son wanted to include sharks in the sensory bin so that he could pretend the fish were escaping a predator! lol

Whereas my daughter wanted her mermaid to swim with the fish! lol

Now, one word of caution, this can be a little messy. Not dirty, as it is just water, but you will end up with some water outside of the bin.

We took our bin outside to play.

But you can also put a towel down under or around to absorb any water if you are playing indoors.

And that’s it! This sensory bin is very easy to assemble.

I hope you and your kids enjoy the fish tank sensory bin as much as we did!
